About This Course

Defensive Pistol Fundamentals is one of the most comprehensive one-day handgun classes you’ll find. Designed to maximize every hour of training, this in-depth course covers an exceptional amount of material in a single day. Students have consistently told us that the depth and breadth of instruction exceeds what they’ve experienced in multi-day courses offered by other training schools.

This comprehensive course covers a broad range of fundamental defensive pistol concepts, including marksmanship fundamentals, holster work, pistol manipulation, movement, and the use of cover and concealment. Students will receive instruction throughout the day and have an opportunity to apply the material through structured range exercises.

The goal of this course is to provide students with a solid foundation of safe, responsible, and effective handgun handling while introducing concepts relevant to defensive situations.

• Range safety and responsible firearm handling

• Grip, stance, sight alignment, and sight picture

• Trigger control and follow-through

• One- and two-handed shooting

• Step-by-step presentation of the handgun from the holster

• Holster work and safe handgun manipulation

• Loading and reloading

• Malfunction procedures

• Shooting from different positions

• Movement and communication

• Shooting while moving

• Cover and concealment

• Defensive shooting concepts

• Introduction to working in pairs

Course Length

Plan to spend approximately 6–8 hours at the range.
Students should arrive on-time and prepared to participate for the entire training day.

Required Equipment

• Quality semi-automatic pistol

• Strong-side belt holster or approved appendix holster

• Sturdy gun belt

• Minimum of three magazines

• Magazine pouch or other suitable method of carrying magazines

• 500 rounds of factory-loaded ammunition — no reloads

• Eye protection

• Hearing protection

Considerations

• Folding chair

• Lunch & Drinking water

• Hat, sunscreen, and bug spray

• Rain gear — training is conducted rain or shine

• Pen and paper

• Cleaning kit, in case basic maintenance is needed during the course

• Knee and/or elbow pads

Student Preparation

Come prepared to learn, participate, and spend the full day at the range. Students should be comfortable safely handling and operating their handgun before attending this course.

If you are brand new to handguns or are not yet comfortable with basic firearm operation, please contact us before registering so we can help determine whether this is the appropriate starting point.

Students are responsible for bringing the required equipment and ammunition. Please ensure that your handgun, holster, magazines, and other equipment are appropriate for the course.

Training is conducted outdoors and may continue in changing weather conditions. Dress appropriately and come prepared for rain, sun, heat, and other outdoor conditions.

If you’ve taken our Tactical Rifle Level 1 course, you qualify for this Level 2 course.
Ready for a fast paced day to take your skills to the next level?

This course will take the skills you learned about operating your weapon, reloading, and clearing malfunctions,
and force you to do all these things with one hand out of play. In addition, we will work on shooting from compromised positions.

In addition, this course will combine Moving & Shooting skills, where you will learn how to effectively shoot while moving.

Standing still in a gunfight will get you killed. You are either pressing the attack, retreating, moving toward cover, or moving toward an objective. Being able to manipulate your weapon one handed, weak handed, and while moving are vital to your success. This course will make extensive use of footwork, weapon control, and shot placement while on the move.

Equipment Required:

• AR Style Rifle

• Sling (Single, Two, or Three Point is fine)

• 3 Magazines

• Magazine carry method

• Approximately 350 rounds of ammunition

• Eye and Ear protection

Prerequisites:

Tactical Rifle Level 1

If you have attended an AR rifle course at another facility where you are familiar with all operations and clearing all malfunctions you will be accepted.
